Baby Name Meanings and OriginsIf name meanings and origins are important to you, then research will likely play a major part in the baby naming process. You may wish to raise your child in a manner that reflects their name and its meaning. You might even choose a name that is important to you and your child’s family. This process can take a considerable amount of time if you are looking at many possibilities.

Well, you’re not alone.

In a huge array of societies and cultures name meanings and origins are extremely important. For centuries choosing the right baby name has been a process, which requires a large amount of consideration. Unfortunately, many names have begun to lose their significance, and the meanings have no relevance. Some of us have no idea what our name means, and therefore do not consider this to be of importance when naming our children. However, with the availability of the Internet, researching baby name meanings and origins can be straightforward.

Where to look for baby name meanings and origins.

There are several online databases one can explore to determine name meanings and origins for both you and your baby. You can look at the history, meaning, and origin of names. This can be incredibly interesting, and can change the way that you feel about a name before deciding on the perfect one.

An excellent starting place is the ParentsConnect website’s baby name meanings and origins page, which has over 25,000 different names and their meanings. You may also want to purchase books like The Baby Name Wizard: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby, which allow you to read about different names in a comfortable and entertaining way. If these aren’t enough, then there are several others options to explore. You can simply type baby name meanings into Google.

You can choose a name that not only sounds great, but also reflects the hopes, dreams, and values of your family. Origins of names are vital for families that want to represent their country of origin, background and religion. You may discover names that you have never heard of before, but represent your family perfectly.

Once you begin to research all of the different options you have for a baby name, you will understand why this decision requires time and effort. There are thousands of names to choose from, and spending the whole nine months deciding isn’t unusual. Popular names can eventually become dated. However, names that have significance and meaning will last a lifetime.

  1. Baby names have great meaning to me. I have prayed about both of my children’s names. My daughter has a unique name and my son a biblical name. Both names fit the child to which they belong so well. My 14 year old is Bobbi Caitlyn. Her first name is a family name and a derivative of her fathers first name. The second name God gave me. My son, 8 years old, is Elijah Michael. I got his whole name through prayer. Although their names have definitive meanings, they also have personal meaning to us. E

  2. Hi E, thanks so much for reading. Your children’s names are beautiful. We love names. They are representative of the family, and they help form an impression of the individual. Wishing the best for your lovely clan now and in the future 🙂
